Global hydrography

Hydrography for every land pixel.

Full means every land pixel of the source grid is included, each with its own place in the drainage network.

Everything is precomputed: tables and layers you can use directly.

What is here

The Flow packages are the methods, and the Full datasets are what they compute. Run the packages on a D8 flow-direction grid, plus the matching elevation for the terrain attributes, and you get FullBasin.

  • Tools

The Flow packages: the methods, released on their own. They work from a D8 flow-direction grid, not from a particular dataset; FlowMorph also reads the elevation, and FlowSink prepares the grid from a DEM.

  • Datasets

The Full series: what the tools compute, precomputed and ready to download. FullBasin is released in full on MERIT Hydro at 90 m. On HydroSHEDS v2.0 at 30 m, the basin and region masks are released for North and South America, and the per-pixel layers will follow.

  • Applications

Studies that use the data or the tools for a question of their own, each naming the release it was built on.

Where FullHydro starts

Where FullHydro starts, and what it makes Work by data providers: acquire and mosaic elevation tiles, fill depressions and correct drainage pathways, and derive a D8 flow-direction grid; the conditioning methods differ by dataset (MERIT Hydro, HydroSHEDS and others). Our work starts from that grid. Trees: the flow directions encoded as trees; the same nine pixels are drawn again as the tree they form, rooted at the outlet, with one selected pixel and the three pixels that drain into it. Outputs: per-pixel rasters, attribute tables and vectors.
